Do I Have to Send My Original Passport to the IRS to Apply for an ITIN?

Do I Have to Mail My Passport to the IRS?

Not necessarily.

When applying for an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN), the IRS requires documentation to establish your identity and foreign status. A valid foreign passport is especially useful because it is the only document that can generally establish both by itself.

However, mailing your original passport to the IRS is not your only option.

What Are My Options?

If you don't want to mail your original passport, the IRS provides alternatives.

You may apply through an IRS-authorized Certifying Acceptance Agent (CAA) or make an appointment at an IRS Taxpayer Assistance Center that provides ITIN document authentication services. Another option may be obtaining certified copies directly from the agency that issued the document.

How Can a CAA Help?

A Certifying Acceptance Agent (CAA) is authorized by the IRS to assist with ITIN applications.

A CAA can review your Form W-7 and authenticate eligible original identification documents. After reviewing an eligible document, the CAA can return it to you rather than sending the original to the IRS.

This can be especially helpful when you need access to your passport for travel, identification, or other purposes.

What About ITIN Applications for Children?

The rules are somewhat different for dependents.

For dependent applicants, a CAA can authenticate passports and civil birth certificates. If other supporting documents are required, such as certain school or medical records, different submission requirements apply.

For this reason, it is important to review the child's specific situation before submitting the ITIN application.
