What's the difference between an apostille and a regular notarization?
A notarization verifies a signature; an apostille authenticates the document itself for use in another country. Many apostille requests start with a notarized document.
Which office handles my apostille — state or federal?
It depends on who issued the document: New Jersey state documents go through the NJ Department of the Treasury, while federal documents go through the U.S. Department of State. We'll help you confirm which applies.
How long does the whole process take?
Timelines vary by issuing office and current workload — we'll let you know what to expect once we review your document.
What is an apostille?
An apostille is a certificate issued by a government office that confirms the signature, the official's capacity and the seal on a public document, so the document can be used in another country that belongs to the Hague Apostille Convention. It does not vouch for the contents of the document.
What is the difference between an apostille, authentication, certification and legalization?
An apostille is the single certificate used between countries in the Hague Apostille Convention. Authentication is the equivalent step when the destination is not in the Convention, and it is often followed by legalization by that country's embassy or consulate. A certified copy is a copy confirmed by the office that holds the record — it is a different thing, and is often a first step. Which one applies depends on the destination country, so confirm it with that country's authorities or consulate; we can help you work out the steps.
Do you issue apostilles?
No. OG Multiservices LLC is not a government agency. Apostilles are issued by government offices — the New Jersey Department of the Treasury for New Jersey documents and the U.S. Department of State for federal documents. We help you prepare the request and submit it.
Does my document need to be notarized before it is apostilled?
It depends on the document. A record issued by a government office, such as a birth certificate, is normally submitted as a certified copy from that office rather than notarized. A document signed by a person — an affidavit or a power of attorney, for example — is normally notarized first, and the apostille then confirms the notary's signature and seal. A notarization verifies a signature; an apostille is issued by a government office on top of it. Notary services are available at our Paterson office.
Do I need a translation?
Not necessarily. The apostille is attached to the original document. Whether the country where you will use it also needs a translation — and whether it should be done before or after the apostille — is decided by that country's authorities. If you need one, we prepare certified translations, including for birth, marriage and legal documents.
Can you help with a document issued in Texas or another state?
Documents from another state, including Texas, are handled by that state's own office (in Texas, the Secretary of State), which is a different process from New Jersey's. Our apostille service is built around New Jersey and federal documents; for a Texas document, message us and we will point you to the right office. In the Spring, Klein and Houston area we work by appointment.
Can I do this by mail if I am not near Paterson?
Yes. You can work with us by mail from anywhere in the United States. We tell you what to send, and the original or certified document has to reach the issuing office, so we plan the mailing with you.

About apostilles and how OG helps

An apostille is a certificate that a government office attaches to a public document so it can be used in another country that belongs to the Hague Apostille Convention. It confirms that the signature, the capacity of the official and the seal on the document are genuine; it does not confirm that the contents are true. OG Multiservices LLC does not issue apostilles — we help you prepare the request and submit it to the office that does.

Which office handles your document depends on who issued it. Documents issued in New Jersey — such as a birth, marriage or divorce record, or a document signed before a New Jersey notary — go through the New Jersey Department of the Treasury. Documents issued by a federal agency, such as an FBI identity history summary, are authenticated by the U.S. Department of State. You can visit our office at 145 Presidential Blvd, Paterson, NJ (Monday to Friday, 9 AM to 5 PM), or work with us by mail from anywhere in the United States. Notary services are available at our Paterson office if your document must be notarized first, and we can prepare a certified translation when the country where you will use the document asks for one.
