Help preparing your documents for the NJ MVC

Many people come to OG before they go to the NJ MVC, unsure whether their documents are in order. OG reviews the documents you plan to present, helps you organize them into one package, explains which ones may need a certified translation and points out anything that looks missing based on the MVC's published requirements. Then you go to the MVC better prepared.

What the MVC asks for depends on the credential you are applying for and on your situation. In general, applicants are asked to show proof of identity and age (the MVC's “6 Points of ID” system), proof of a New Jersey address and a Social Security number or ITIN; the MVC publishes an affidavit for applicants who are not eligible for a Social Security number and do not have an ITIN. The 6 Points of ID only covers proof of identity, so the MVC's requirements sheet for your credential is the place to see the full list, and it asks for original documents or certified copies. The official pages are linked below; please check them for the current rules.

Documents that are not in English: the MVC's published guidance asks for a certified English translation. A document that is already in English does not need one, and not every foreign document is used for the MVC. If one of yours needs translating, OG prepares certified translations of foreign driver licenses, birth certificates and other documents, in Paterson, NJ or online.

Standard license or REAL ID: both allow you to drive in New Jersey. A REAL ID is generally needed to board domestic flights or enter certain federal facilities unless you use another acceptable ID, such as a passport. A REAL ID has its own, different document requirements, so decide which one you want before you gather your documents; the MVC's document selector and requirements sheet show the current rules for each.

Before your OG appointment, bring the original documents you plan to use, any document that is not in English, proof of your address and your Social Security number or ITIN information if you have one. You can also message us on WhatsApp with your situation.

OG is independent of the MVC. We do not issue licenses, decide eligibility or speak for the MVC, and we cannot promise that the MVC will accept any particular document. The NJ MVC makes every decision about your documents and your credential.

Does OG file anything with the NJ MVC for me?
No. OG helps you prepare and understand the process. The MVC makes the final decisions about your documents, your appointment and your license.
Do I need to know how many MVC points my documents are worth?
No. Tell OG which documents you have and we can review them and organize your package. The MVC publishes the point values and decides what it accepts.
Does having a foreign driver license waive my Road Test?
Not automatically. OG can review your foreign license and explain what to ask about; whether you must take the Road Test is decided by the NJ MVC.
Is OG part of the NJ MVC?
No. OG Multiservices is an independent business and is not affiliated with the NJ MVC. We help you review and prepare your documents; the MVC makes every decision.
Which of my documents need a certified translation?
The MVC's published guidance asks for a certified English translation of documents that are not in English. A document already in English does not need one. Show OG your documents and we can tell you which ones look like they need translation. The MVC decides what it accepts.
Can OG get me an appointment at the MVC?
No. The NJ MVC controls appointment availability, and OG cannot promise a date, time or location. For a first driver license the MVC requires an appointment for the Initial Permit and asks you to bring your documents. OG can help you understand the process and prepare your documents and what to bring.
Will the MVC accept my documents after OG reviews them?
OG can review and organize your documents, but only the NJ MVC decides what it accepts, so we cannot promise a result. Reviewing them first helps you arrive knowing what to expect.
What is the difference between a standard license and a REAL ID?
Both let you drive in New Jersey. A REAL ID carries a star and is generally needed to board domestic flights or enter certain federal facilities, unless you use another acceptable ID such as a passport. A REAL ID has its own, different document requirements; use the MVC's document selector and requirements sheet for the current rules.
I don't have a Social Security number or ITIN. Can OG help me prepare?
The MVC publishes an affidavit for applicants who are not eligible for a Social Security number and do not have an ITIN. OG can help you understand the form and what to prepare. Follow the instructions on the MVC's official affidavit; the MVC decides whether it is accepted.
