Small Business Tax Preparation

What's included for small business owners?

Self-employed people, freelancers and owners of sole proprietorships or single-member LLCs generally report business income and expenses on Schedule C with their personal return, and pay self-employment tax on their net earnings. The rules and rates are set by the IRS and change by tax year. We help you organize income records (1099-NEC or 1099-K forms, invoices, bank deposits) and expense records (supplies, software, phone, vehicle mileage and similar), and prepare the return for your review.

Whether an expense is deductible depends on your business and on your records, so bring what you have and we go through it with you rather than assuming anything is deductible. If your income comes from driving or delivering through apps, see our gig worker page; if you also need an ITIN yourself, see our ITIN service.

Frequently asked questions

I don't have organized records — can you still help?
Yes, we regularly help clients organize receipts and records as part of preparing their return.
Do you help with quarterly estimated taxes?
Yes, we can help you estimate and plan for quarterly payments to avoid surprises at filing time.
Can you help me get an ITIN for my business too?
An ITIN is a number for an individual, not for a business — a business uses an Employer Identification Number (EIN), which is a different number. If you, as the owner, need an ITIN yourself, see our ITIN application service, which we often prepare alongside a return.
What records should I bring for a Schedule C?
Bring records of the money your business received (1099 forms, invoices, bank or payment-app deposits) and of what it spent (receipts, statements, a mileage log if you use a vehicle for the business). Whether an expense is deductible depends on your situation, so bring what you have and we will go through it together.
What is self-employment tax?
It is the tax that self-employed people pay toward Social Security and Medicare, calculated on net self-employment earnings. The rates and limits are set by the IRS and can change by tax year; we calculate it as part of preparing your return.
