Uber, Lyft & DoorDash Driver Tax Preparation

What's different about gig economy taxes?

Platforms such as Uber, Lyft, DoorDash and Instacart generally treat drivers as independent contractors rather than employees: taxes are not withheld from your pay, and you report your earnings and pay self-employment tax yourself. You may receive a 1099-K or 1099-NEC from a platform, and income is generally reportable whether or not a form arrives. We help you organize those forms, your mileage records and your vehicle and phone expenses into a return prepared for your review.

The rules for mileage, expenses and forms change by tax year, and whether an expense is deductible depends on your records and situation. If you drive for more than one app, we combine them into one return. For the broader picture of self-employment, see our self-employed and Schedule C page.

Frequently asked questions

I drive for more than one app — is that a problem?
No, this is common. We combine income and expenses from all your platforms into one accurate return.
I didn't track my mileage carefully — now what?
Bring what you have — app trip history, calendar entries, receipts — and we will explain what records the IRS looks for and what can be supported from them. We can also talk about how to track mileage going forward.
Do I need to make quarterly payments?
Many gig drivers do, to avoid a penalty at filing time — we can help you estimate what to set aside.
Do I have to report income if the platform did not send me a 1099?
Income is generally reportable whether or not you receive a form. Bring your platform earnings summaries, bank or payment-app records and anything else showing what you earned, and we will go through them with you.
Which expenses can a driver deduct?
Common categories include vehicle costs (using mileage or actual expenses, depending on the method), phone, tolls and parking, and platform fees. Whether an expense is deductible, and how much, depends on your records and situation — we go through them with you.
