What is Form I-765?

An Employment Authorization Document (EAD), often called a work permit, has an expiration date. Renewing it uses Form I-765, Application for Employment Authorization, filed with USCIS. USCIS explains when and how to file a renewal, and which category applies, on its official Form I-765 page.

The same form is used for first-time applications and replacements, and the eligibility category printed on your current card matters for a renewal. If you are not sure which category applies, tell us — we will not guess for you, and USCIS's instructions list the categories.

What if my address or name changed?

What should I have ready for a work permit renewal?
Your current work permit (front and back), your passport, your most recent I-94 and the documents that show your category, such as an approval or receipt notice. If your name, address or other details changed, tell us so the form matches your records.
Is this the same as applying for my first work permit?

Do you send my renewal to USCIS?
No. We prepare the I-765 from what you provide; you review it, sign it and file it the way USCIS's instructions describe.
