What is adjustment of status?

Adjustment of status is the process some people who are already in the United States use to apply for lawful permanent residence (a green card) without leaving the country. The main form is I-485, Application to Register Permanent Residence or Adjust Status, filed with USCIS together with supporting forms and evidence.

It commonly follows an approved or pending family or employment-based petition, but who can adjust — and when — is a legal question that depends on your situation. USCIS publishes the current edition and instructions on its official Form I-485 page.

How is this different from consular processing?
Adjustment of status is filed with USCIS from inside the United States. Consular processing is handled through the Department of State and a U.S. embassy or consulate abroad. Which route applies depends on your situation — see our consular processing page.
Do you file my I-485 for me?
