What is Form I-130?

Form I-130, Petition for Alien Relative, is filed with USCIS by a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident to establish a qualifying family relationship with a relative. It is often the first step toward that relative's immigrant visa or green card — approving the petition does not, by itself, grant either.

Families commonly use it for a spouse, parent, child or sibling. Which relationships and categories apply depends on your situation, and USCIS publishes the current form, edition and instructions on its official Form I-130 page.
